Bratislava Stock Exchange (BSSE) was founded through a Memorandum of Foundation from 8 January 1991 by banks and insurance companies. Officially, BSSE was established on 15 March 1991 in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic from 1990. BSSE is the sole operator of a regulated market of securities in the Slovak Republic.
On 6 April 2023 BSSE commemorates the 30th anniversary of the start of trading.
The first trades on BSSE floor were realized on 6 April 1993 with two issues of listed bonds – VÚB and Komerční banka. These bonds were deed securities, because trading with book-entry securities was not physically, technically, or legally possible at that time, because according to the Securities Act, the transfer of book-entry security required its registration at the Securities Centre (SCP), which was contractually implemented until 30 June 1993. After this, trading of the shares from the first wave of coupon privatization, which were issued by companies in the territory of the Slovak Republic, started on BSSE.
Initially, trading on BSSE was realized in 14-days intervals, later on weekly periodicity – on Tuesday with listed securities and on Wednesday with registered securities.
More interesting facts and details from the period when the trading started on BSSE is also available in the Annual Report of BSSE from 1993.
